On the tiptop of happiness, cast down to misery – this line from a play by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is a fitting description of the emotional extremes of our program Baroque tunings. The Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi is a twelve-part ode for soloists, choir, and orchestra, with a jubilant character. It is suspected that Vivaldi composed it to celebrate the Venetian victory in the war against the Turks in 1716. Contrasting with this exultant mood is the Miserere from Jan Dismas Zelenka, an intense supplication, based on a penitential psalm by the biblical King David. He asked God for forgiveness after having his loyal soldier Uriah killed, because he did not want Uriah to find out that he had committed adultery with his wife Bathsheba and made her pregnant. All the more reason to humble oneself, and Zelenka's music overwhelmingly conveys that.

 

The Gloria and it Miserere form the heart of Baroque tunings, for which the Leiden Chamber Choir is once again delighted to collaborate with ConcertoValiante Barok. This professional orchestra plays on authentic baroque instruments and therefore also in baroque tuning, which is slightly lower than modern tuning. In addition to the two central works, ConcertoValiante Barok will perform the viola concerto by Johann Wenzel Stamitz, with Sonia Huang on viola, and the aria ‘Vedrò con mio diletto’ out Il Giustino from Vivaldi, sung by alto Natalie Marssdorf. The a cappella work Hail, Star of the Sea van Trond Kverno, performed by the Leiden Chamber Choir, completes the program
