In Joseph Haydn's Nelson Mass, choir and soloists join the orchestra. Haydn himself simply called this work Missa. In the 19th century it acquired the nickname Nelson Mass because when Haydn composed the mass, the British under Admiral Nelson defeated Napoleon. The trumpets in the Benedictus were seen as a symbol of the British victory. In reality, Haydn had already finished the mass when that news became known, but the name has remained.

The first part of Dixit Dominus by the Baroque composer Georg Friedrich Händel is on the program. This is Händel’s arrangement of Psalm 110, “The Lord Speaks to My Lord.” The then 22-year-old composer incorporated insights he had gained during a study of Italian opera into this composition.

One of the greatest contemporary classical composers is Arvo Pärt. Two days after the attacks in Madrid on March 11, 2004, he began composing Da pacem Domine, ‘Give us peace, Lord’. The Leiden Chamber Choir sang this contemplative work for you.
